What is a purse seine vessel?
Author:
A purse seiner is a vessel that employs the purse‑seine fishing method to catch fish. Most purse seiners are wooden boats with flat bottoms and square sterns, offering relatively high speed, excellent maneuverability, and good lateral stability. In operation, purse seiners may use either a twin‑boat or a single‑boat technique. In the twin‑boat method, two vessels each hold one end of the net and sail in opposite directions around the school of fish, encircling it with the net; in the single‑boat method, a small boat—known as a “sampan”—is first lowered to connect with one end of the net, after which the main vessel takes up the other end and sails in a circle until the sampan is reached, at which point the net is hauled in. Purse seiners typically have short hulls, shallow drafts, low freeboards, and outstanding handling characteristics. As purse‑seine gear has grown larger, these vessels require taller main masts and booms, along with more powerful winches for hauling in the nets.

Purse seiners typically have short hulls, shallow drafts, and low freeboards, while maintaining good handling characteristics. As purse‑net gear has grown larger, requiring taller main masts and booms, and since all crew members tend to congregate on one side during hauling, these vessels place particularly high demands on their stability.
A purse seiner is a type of fishing vessel primarily used to catch fast‑moving, pelagic fish schools in the ocean. Purse seiners can operate either as single vessels or in pairs: upon locating a school, they deploy a long, belt‑shaped net around it to encircle the fish, then draw the bottom line of the net tight, forming a large pocket that traps the catch inside.
