A ship is primarily composed of the hull, the ship’s propulsion system, shipboard outfitting, and other equipment.
The ship’s hull framework consists of the keel, bilge stringers, frames, floor beams, bilge strakes, stempost, and sternpost, which together form the vessel’s structural skeleton. The keel primarily bears the longitudinal bending moment of the hull, while the bilge stringers share part of this bending moment and enhance the hull’s resistance to external loads.
The ribs withstand lateral water pressure and maintain the hull’s geometric shape. Together, the frames and ribs form a lattice structure that secures the shell plating and enhances the hull’s structural strength. The bilge keel helps reduce rolling when the vessel is underway in waves.
The ship’s propulsion derives from two distinct types of machinery: turbines and steam engines. A steam engine consists of three main components: the boiler, the cylinder, and the condenser. In the boiler, water is boiled into steam through a combustion process. The steam is then conveyed to the cylinder via pipes, with valves regulating the timing of its delivery to the cylinder.
Steam expands within the cylinder, driving the piston to perform work, while the cooled steam is conveyed through pipes to the condenser, where it is recondensed into water. This cycle repeats continuously as the steam engine operates.
